The founder of Oculus, Palmer Luckey, was gaining reputation for having the largest personal collection of head-mounted display in the world. For many years he has been moderating in Meant to Be Seen 3D (MTBS3D), a discussion forum on 3D.3 Palmer developed the idea of ​​creating a new head-mounted display that would be more effective than those currently in use. the market, as well as cheaper for gamers. Coincidentally, John Carmack was doing his own research at the same time that Palmer was carrying out his development. Later, Carmack would create a sample version that would favor the Luckey prototype. In parallel, just before the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Id Software announced that its future update of Doom 3, which would be known as the BFG Edition, would be compatible with the head-mounted display units.4 During the convention, Carmack presented a head-mounted display attached with adhesive tape based on Palmer’s Oculus Rift prototype, which worked with the Carmack software. This had a high-speed IMU and a 5.6-inch (14cm) LCD screen visible through dual lenses that were positioned above the eyes.
